Linux Vs. Windows

Published by princessalissa at 10:16 pm under Computing Edit This

 Linux vs Windows

Over the last few weeks, I have been experimenting with Linux.  At first it was completely overwhelming, but I think I’m catching on!

I have a laptop that I was looking to “speed up”, per se, and I had heard that Linux was less resource-hungry.  I decided to try it out, but not without reading a TON about it first!  I decided to go with Xubuntu, which is a derivative of Ubuntu.

Xubuntu is a flavor of Linux that is pretty lightweight, and supposivly user-friendly.  Uh huh.  Well, I do have to admit that the installation part was easy.  They provide a program called Wubi that partitions and installs it for you, and allows you to remove it like any other program using the “add/remove programs” feature in Windows.

That being said, apparently my computer didnt like that because upon reboot, it kept throwing out a CMOS error, which was a whole other headache in itself.  Once I was able to boot into Linux, I was quite amazed that it was compatible with *most* of my hardware, right from the start.

Customizing the desktop took some learning to do, and I still cant figure out how to make it accept full themes (icons, bars, everything!) but I’m making do with what Ive got.  I love the ease of finding and installing new programs - but I seem to miss the “softness” of XP.

I guess XP just feels more polished.  And I guess since I learned computers using DOS, and have used Windows ever since it came out, Im a little partial.  But I have to give it to them - Linux does make my internet page loading time speed up a lot!

All in all, I’m glad I gave Linux a shot, but I honestly cant imagine making the switch permanent.
